What Individual Therapy Can Do For Teens and Young Adults

Being a teenager or young adult has always been hard. Right now, it feels harder than ever.

The questions are big: Who am I? What do I want? Why does everything feel so heavy? And the world isn’t exactly making it easier to find the answers.

At Sentience Mental Health, we get that. Our therapists in Valparaiso, IN, work with teens and young adults through a developmental lens, which means we meet them exactly where they are, not where we think they should be. We don’t talk down to them. We don’t rush them. We create a warm, caring space where they can say the stuff they can’t say anywhere else.

Every approach we use is tailored to the individual: their personality, their challenges, and what will really help them move forward. They might work one-on-one with a therapist, join a peer group, or have their sessions involve some family support along the way. We find what fits, and we go from there.

Whatever you’re carrying in your youth, we’re here for it. We bring the belief, the tools, and the team. You just have to show up.

We Help With All the Stuff Life Throws at You

Our therapy sessions for teens & young adults support a wide range of concerns. You don’t need a diagnosis to come in. You just need to be ready to start.

For the worry that won’t quiet down, the panic that comes out of nowhere, and the thoughts that loop on repeat.

For the sadness, the flatness, the irritability, and the pulling away from everything that used to matter.

For teens and young adults who are smart and capable but can’t seem to get out of their own way.

Gentle, trauma-informed care that helps them work through hard past experiences at a pace that feels safe and secure.

A compassionate, non-judgmental space to work through a complicated relationship with your body.

For navigating friendships, romantic relationships, family conflict, and the social pressures that come with growing up.

For the teen who’s doing everything and running on empty, and the young adult who can’t figure out why they’re so exhausted.

Support through the big shifts: starting high school, leaving for college, entering the workforce, and everything that doesn’t come with a manual.

For the young adults who are stepping out on their own and discovering that freedom feels a lot more complicated than they expected.

Tools We Use in Therapy for Teens & Young Adults

This is the heart of the work. These are private, consistent sessions where teens and young adults can be honest, be heard, and start to figure things out.

Sometimes the most powerful thing a teen or young adult can hear is that they’re not the only one going through this. Our peer group sessions offer connection, perspective, and the relief of realizing others get it too.

We help teens and young adults spot the thought patterns that are keeping them stuck, and start to shift them, so they can respond to life in a way that truly feels manageable.

We help them make room for the hard feelings without letting those feelings run the show. Instead of fighting everything, teens and young adults can learn how to take meaningful steps toward the life they really want.

For teens who are resistant, ambivalent, or just not sure they want to be in therapy, these approaches meet them where they are and build momentum from there.

We look at each teen and young adult through a developmental lens, understanding that what’s happening at 14 looks very different from what’s happening at 22, and we work with that, not against it.

Sometimes the most helpful thing we can do is bring the family into the room. We offer family sessions and parent coaching when it’s part of the picture, so everyone is working in the same direction.

Our Approach

How Our Teen & Young Adult Therapy Works

Step 1

Begin Your Journey

For younger teens, we typically begin with a parent or guardian present so we can understand your child's history, strengths, and what's been going on. For older teens and young adults, we go straight to them. Either way, we take the time to really get to know who we're working with.

Step 2

Co-Create Your Path

We work with teens and young adults to put together a treatment plan that makes sense for their life and their goals. For teens, parents and guardians are kept in the loop in whatever way feels right for everyone involved.

Step 3

Integrate And Evolve

Sessions continue with regular check-ins on progress, and we adjust the approach as things evolve. If family therapy or parent coaching would help, we'll weave that in. And if something isn't working, we say so and try something else.

If you’re asking the question, that’s already a pretty good sign it’s worth looking into. Teens may benefit from therapy if:

  • You’re noticing changes in their mood, sleep, appetite, or social life
  • They’re withdrawing from things they used to enjoy
  • School is suffering
  • They seem overwhelmed, anxious, or persistently low.

You don’t have to wait for a crisis. A consultation is a great first step, and we’re happy to help you find out if therapy is the right fit.

A lot, actually. Our therapists in Valparaiso, IN, support teens and young adults through anxiety, depression, ADHD, social stress, body image concerns, trauma, family conflict, relationship challenges, life transitions, and self-esteem struggles. If you’re not sure whether what your teen is going through falls into one of those categories, reach out anyway. We’ll figure it out together.

What your teen shares in a teen counselling session is kept strictly confidential, with a few important exceptions: if they disclose a plan to hurt themselves or someone else, or if someone is hurting them.

For anything else, if your therapist feels it would be helpful to involve you, they’ll talk through that with your teen first and make that decision collaboratively. We want your teen to trust the process, and that means they need to know this is a confidential space.

That’s one of the most common worries parents have, and it’s a fair one. Our teen therapists in Northwest Indiana are genuinely good at connecting with young people. We don’t push, we don’t lecture, and we don’t make them feel like they’re in trouble. Most teens who come in guarded start to open up pretty quickly once they realize this is actually a no-judgment zone. Give it a few sessions before you worry.

Some teens feel real relief within the first one to three sessions, just having a safe space to say what they’ve been holding in can shift something quickly. For most, meaningful progress shows up around 8 to 12 sessions. For teens navigating longer-standing patterns, trauma, or family challenges, the process can take six to twelve months or more. The more engaged they are, and the more support they have at home, the better and faster the outcome tends to be.

We look at everything through a developmental lens, which means we take into account the very specific pressures, milestones, and emotional landscape of being a teenager or young adult. Sessions might look a little different too: more creative, more active, more flexible than a typical adult therapy session. We meet them where they are, instead of where we’d expect an adult to be.

Quite a bit. The pressure of social media, constant comparison, cyberbullying, and the anxiety of always being reachable takes a real toll on teens and young adults in ways that didn’t exist a generation ago. It shows up as anxiety, low self-esteem, sleep issues, and a distorted sense of where they stand compared to everyone else. Therapy gives young individuals a space to untangle what’s real from what’s a highlight reel, build a healthier relationship with technology, and develop the kind of self-worth that doesn’t depend on likes and follows.

Therapy isn’t just for crisis mode. A lot of young adults come to us in that in-between space: not falling apart exactly, but not quite okay either. Maybe you’re navigating a big transition, figuring out who you are outside of school or your family, dealing with relationships that feel complicated, or just carrying a low hum of anxiety that won’t quit. You don’t have to hit rock bottom to deserve support. If something feels off and you’re ready to do something about it, that’s more than enough reason to show up.

You can book a free 15-minute consultation, call us at (219) 200-4231, or reach out through our contact form. Parents are welcome to reach out on behalf of their teen, and older teens and young adults can reach out directly. We’re happy to help you find the right next step.

We do. We also offer individual therapy for adults and couples therapy. In addition, we do see children ages 6 and up. If a parent wants their own support alongside their teen’s treatment, or if the whole family could benefit from some help, we can work with that too.
