Individual Therapy in Valparaiso, IN

Therapy for real people going through real stuff.

At Sentience Mental Health, we work with people of all ages and backgrounds, and we're proudly LGBTQIA+ affirming and inclusive of all races, genders, and ethnicities. In-person therapy in Valparaiso, IN, and virtually across Indiana and Illinois.

Life wasn’t supposed to feel like this.

You keep showing up at work, at home, everywhere, all of the time. You get through your to-do list, reply to the messages, keep things running.

But it all feels heavier than it should.

The things that used to come naturally now take effort. You’re more checked out in conversations. More on edge. More tired. The people and parts of your life you care about are still there, but you don’t feel as connected to them.

In therapy, we help you release the tension so life starts to feel more like something you really want to be part of.

If you’re struggling with:

Individual therapy can help you take a breath, find your footing, and keep going.

What Individual Therapy Can Do For You

You’ve been holding it together for a while now. And honestly? You’re pretty good at it. But somewhere underneath the packed schedule, the people counting on you, and the list that never quite gets done, there’s a version of you that really just wants to breathe.

At Sentience Mental Health, individual therapy is where that starts.

Our name says it all: Sentience, the capacity to feel, to sense, to be fully alive in your own life. That capacity lives in you. Sometimes it just needs a little help waking up.

Every approach we use is fully personalized to you, your story, your needs, and what will actually make a difference. Your therapist in Northwest Indiana might draw from ACT, CBT, mindfulness and somatic therapies, trauma-informed care, or a combination of all of the above.

Whatever you’re carrying, we’re here to share the load. We bring the belief, the tools, and the team. You bring yourself.

We Help With All the Stuff Life Throws at You

Our individual therapy sessions support a wide range of concerns. You don’t need a diagnosis to show up. You just need to be ready to start.

For the thoughts that won’t quiet down, no matter how many times you tell them to.

For the days when getting off the couch feels like climbing a mountain.

For people who are done feeling like everyone else got a manual, and they didn’t.

Gentle, trauma-informed care that heals old wounds at a speed that feels right.

For those running on fumes who are ready to stop and reset.

For when the anger feels bigger than you, and you’re ready to understand it instead of fighting it.

Compassionate care for navigating the highs, the lows, and everything in between.

A steady hand through the big shifts, like a career change or move that doesn’t come with a roadmap.

Because when becoming a parent doesn’t feel the way you expected, you deserve real support.

For the stress and burnout, career changes, and the dread that shows up the night before work.

Tools We Use in Individual Therapy

Whether you prefer one-on-one sessions or the shared experience of a group, we’re here for you. Some people need a quiet space to unpack things. Others feel less alone when they realize they’re not the only ones going through it. Either way, you’ve got options, and we’ll help you find what’s best.

We help you make room for the hard thoughts and feelings without letting them run the show. Instead of getting stuck, you learn how to take meaningful steps toward the life you really want.

We work together to spot the patterns that keep you stuck. Then we start to shift them, so you can respond to life in a way that actually feels like you.

Sometimes your body knows what your brain hasn’t caught up to yet. We slow things down and tune in to what’s happening beneath the surface, so you can feel calmer and more present.

No two people are the same, so your therapy shouldn’t be either. We draw from a range of eclectic approaches and tailor them to you: your story, your goals, your needs.

We recognize that your experiences matter and that healing needs to feel safe. Our approach is grounded in compassion and trust, so you can work through what’s hard without feeling overwhelmed or pushed too far, too fast.

We look at the full picture: your culture, identity, lived experiences, and the communities you’re part of. This space is affirming of LGBTQIA+ identities and respectful of all backgrounds, so you don’t have to explain or shrink parts of who you are. We celebrate you and tailor our approach to fit your needs.

Our Approach

How Our Individual Therapy Works

Step 1

Begin Your Journey

We start by learning about your life: what’s been going on, what’s been weighing on you, and what’s bringing you in. This helps us understand the challenges you’re facing and where you need support most.

Step 2

Co-Create Your Path

From there, we collaborate with you to put together a treatment plan and a pace that truly makes sense for your life. You'll know what we're working toward, and why.

Step 3

Integrate And Evolve

We meet regularly for sessions, supporting you as you work through challenges, build new tools, and start to feel change. Along the way, we check in on your progress and adjust as needed.

Most people find real value in having a caring, skilled person outside their immediate circle to talk through what’s going on. When you show up and genuinely engage with the process, individual therapy can help you gain clarity, break old patterns, and create meaningful change. It’s not a magic fix, but it works. And we believe in your capacity to get there.

Typically, individual therapy sessions happen once a week or once every other week. You and your therapist in Northwest Indiana will figure out the right frequency together during your initial treatment planning, based on what you’re working through and what fits your life.

This is your therapy, which means your feedback matters more than you might think. If something isn’t clicking, if an approach doesn’t feel right, or if you’re wondering about the fit, your therapist genuinely wants to hear it. You won’t hurt their feelings. That kind of honesty is part of what makes therapy work. It helps your therapist serve you better, or helps you both figure out if a different therapist on our team might be an even better match.

At Sentience Mental Health, we’re a practice of psychotherapists, not physicians, so prescribing medication isn’t something we do. That said, if you or your therapist in Valparaiso, IN, feels that connecting with a doctor for psychiatric care might be helpful, we can help you find the right person.

Probably, yes. You’re resourceful, and you’ve gotten through hard stuff before. But there’s a difference between getting through something and truly working through it. Therapy isn’t a sign that you can’t cope. It’s a sign that you’re self-aware enough to know when a little extra support would help, and that’s genuinely something to feel good about.

Honestly, it’s different for everyone, and that’s kind of the point. In general, you can expect to talk through what’s going on in your life right now, explore the patterns and experiences that got you here, and figure out what you want to be different. Some people need short-term, focused support. Others are working through deeper stuff that takes more time. Either way, what you put in shapes what you get out.

What you share in session stays in session. Full stop. Your therapist is legally and ethically required to keep everything you discuss private, with a small number of exceptions required by law, such as if there’s a risk of serious harm to yourself or someone else. Before you begin, you’ll receive a written informed consent agreement that spells all of this out clearly. If you have questions, just ask.

It depends. Some people feel real relief in as few as one to three sessions. Just saying out loud what’s been weighing on you can shift something. For most people, significant relief from symptoms shows up somewhere around 8 to 12 sessions. And for those working through deeper, longer-standing patterns, meaningful change can take six to nine months or more.

None of those timelines are bad ones. Some of the best, most lasting work happens slowly. We’re not here to rush you. We’re here to help you get where you’re trying to go.

You can book a free 15-minute consultation with a specific therapist, or reach out to our office, and we’ll help match you with the right person. Book online, call us at (219) 200-4231, or use our contact form. Either way, we’re here to make this first step feel as easy as possible. We’ve got you.

We do! In addition to individual therapy, we offer couples therapy, therapy for teens and young adults, and therapy for children ages 6+.

If you and your partner are looking to find your way back to each other, our couples therapy is a warm, honest space to do that work together. And if you’ve got a teen or young adult in your life who needs support, we’ve got a spot for them too.
