You still love each other. So why does it feel so hard to be together?
You share a home, a life, maybe kids, a mortgage and a thousand inside jokes. But somewhere along the way, something shifted. The conversations got shorter or sharper. You stopped reaching for each other. You started feeling more like roommates than partners.
You’re not fighting about the big stuff, most of the time. You’re fighting about dishes and schedules and who said what, because the real stuff feels too hard to say out loud.
Couples therapy is your way forward.
If your relationship is feeling the weight of:
- Constant conflict that goes in circles and never really gets resolved
- Struggling to rebuild trust after a betrayal or a rough patch
- A major life transition that's put a strain on your relationship
- Feeling like you're being misunderstood, no matter how hard you try to explain
- The quiet kind of loneliness that comes from living with someone who feels far away
Couples therapy can help you find your way back to each other.

What Couples Therapy Can Do For You & Your Partner
Every relationship goes through seasons. Some of them are really hard. But hard doesn’t mean hopeless, and rough patches don’t have to become permanent ones.
At Sentience Mental Health, we believe that the foundation of a strong relationship can be rebuilt, brick by brick, with the right support. We draw on Gottman techniques and emotionally focused approaches to help you understand what’s really happening between you, and start doing something about it.
Every couple we work with is different, so every approach looks different, too. We tailor everything to you: your dynamic, your history, and what’s actually going to help you reconnect.
You bring yourselves. We bring the tools, the warmth, and a whole lot of belief that things can genuinely get better.

We Help With What's Hard Between You
Our couples therapy sessions support a wide range of concerns. You don’t have to be in crisis to come to couples therapy. You just have to be ready to try.
Conflict Resolution
For the arguments that go in circles and leave you both feeling worse than when they started.
Disconnection
For couples who love each other but have drifted apart and aren’t quite sure how to find their way back.
Infidelity & Rebuilding Trust
Compassionate support for navigating one of the hardest things a relationship can go through.
Relationship Check-Ins
For couples who are doing okay and want to build something stronger before problems take root.
Separation & Discernment
Support for couples who aren’t sure what they want, and need a safe space to figure it out.
Life Transitions
A steady hand through the big shifts, like a new baby, a career change, or a move, that put unexpected pressure on a relationship.
Supporting Your Family
For couples navigating the stress of raising kids or teens, because parenting is hard, but it doesn’t have to pull you apart.
Couples Therapy Sessions
Every couple is different, so every session looks a little different, too. Some weeks, you’ll work through a specific conflict. Others you’ll focus on rebuilding connection or practicing new ways of communicating. Your couples therapist in Valparaiso, IN, leads the way, and you both show up.
Gottman Method Techniques
Developed by Dr. John Gottman, one of the leading researchers in relationship science, these techniques help couples identify the patterns that are pulling them apart and build the habits that bring them closer. Think of it like reinforcing the foundation of a house: we identify what’s weakened, and we rebuild it, together.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
We help you get underneath the arguments to what’s really going on: the fear, the longing, the parts you haven’t quite been able to say. When you can hear each other at that level, everything starts to shift.
Individual Therapy Sessions When Needed
Sometimes it helps for each partner to have a session on their own. If your therapist feels that would be useful, we’ll work that into the process.
Couples-Centered Homework
Real change doesn’t only happen in the therapy room. Between sessions, your therapist may suggest small, practical things to try together, because the work you do in everyday life is where the real reconnection happens.
Alternative Therapies
We look at the full picture and aren’t limited to traditional approaches. For couples who are open to it, we can incorporate holistic and alternative therapies tailored to who you both are and what you both need.

Our Approach
How Our Couples Therapy Works
Step 1
We Start With the Two of You
We meet with you as a couple to understand your relationship: where the pain points are, where your strengths are, and what's brought you in. From there, we develop a treatment plan that's built around your specific dynamic.
Step 2
We Go Deeper When It Helps
If it would be useful, we may invite each partner to come in for an individual session. This gives each of you a chance to share your perspective fully, so your therapist can support you both as effectively as possible.
Step 3
We Work On It, Together
We meet regularly for sessions, and we assign couples-centered work to do between them, because reconnection happens in the small moments of everyday life. We check in on your progress along the way and adjust as needed.
We've tried couples therapy before, and it didn't work. Why would this be different?
Sometimes therapy doesn’t click, and that’s worth talking about honestly. The most important thing is that you feel your couples therapist is working for both of you, not just one of you. At Sentience Mental Health, we work hard to stay genuinely neutral and attuned to both partners. If something ever feels off, we want to hear it. That feedback isn’t a problem. It’s part of the process.
How long will couples therapy take?
Every couple is different, so the honest answer is: it depends. Your couples therapist in Valparaiso, IN, will start working on new patterns with you from the very first session, and many couples notice real shifts within four to six weeks. For most couples, feeling more confident and connected takes around three to four months. For longer-standing patterns or deeper wounds, six to twelve months is a reasonable expectation. None of those timelines are bad ones. What matters is that things are changing.
What if I can't get my partner to come to therapy with me?
That’s more common than you’d think, and it’s not a dealbreaker. If only one of you is ready right now, individual therapy can still help you navigate your relationship, communicate more effectively, and sometimes create the conditions that make your partner more open to joining the process down the road. You don’t have to wait for both of you to be ready before you get support.
Do we have to be married to come to couples therapy?
Not at all. We work with couples at any stage of a relationship, married or not, long-term or newly committed, navigating a rough patch or just wanting to build something stronger before problems take root. If you’re in a relationship that matters to you and you want support, you’re in the right place.
Do you help with infidelity or intimacy issues?
Yes. Our couples therapists in Northwest Indiana are experienced in supporting couples through the painful, complicated work of rebuilding trust after infidelity, as well as navigating intimacy challenges. While our therapists aren’t specifically trained as sex therapists, they’re deeply familiar with these issues and can help you and your partner reconnect and move forward with honesty and care.
Is couples therapy confidential?
Yes, everything shared in your sessions stays between you, your partner, and your therapist. Your therapist is legally and ethically required to keep your sessions private, with a small number of exceptions required by law, such as if there’s a risk of serious harm. If you have questions about how confidentiality works in a couples context, just ask.
What will our relationship look like after couples therapy?
Most couples come out of the process with stronger communication, less conflict, and a renewed sense of connection. You’ll have real tools for handling disagreements before they spiral, a better understanding of what each of you needs, and more of the everyday enjoyment that can quietly disappear when things get hard. We help you build habits that really do stick.
How long will it take to feel better?
Faster than you might think. Your couples therapist starts introducing new patterns and tools from the very first session. Most couples are practicing healthier habits and resolving arguments more effectively within four to six weeks. Deeper change, particularly for long-standing patterns, typically takes three to twelve months.
How do I get started with couples therapy?
You can book a free 15-minute consultation, call us at (219) 200-4231, or reach out through our contact form. You’re welcome to reach out together or on your own. Either way, we’ll take it from there and help you figure out the right next step.
Do you offer other types of therapy besides couples therapy?
We do. We also offer individual therapy for adults. If one or both partners would benefit from individual support alongside couples work, we can help with that too. In addition, we offer therapy for teens and young adults, as well as for children ages 6+.
